In the 1800s the leis were used as symbols of good luck, at times when the sailors were sailing out. Leis were being thrown into the ocean, and if a lei would drift back to the shore, it was a sign that the departing man who had thrown the lei into the water, would one day return to the islands. This tradition not only applied to the sailors, but also to visitors of Hawaii who were returning home.
Many couples marry in Hawaii, fascinated with the beauty and art craft of the flower leis. The fresh and colourful flowers especially made for the bride and groom will be a treasured memory for the rest of their lives together.
Hundreds of flowers bloom on the islands of Hawaii, but the most famous one is the Hibiscus, which is the symbol of the State of Hawaii. All islands of Hawaii each have their own flower to represent them. Many tropical flowers that also bloom in Asia and the rest of the Pacific, and which quite often fulfil a symbolic role to a government or people, also flourish on Hawaii.
