In the 1800s the leis were used as symbols of good luck, at times when the sailors were sailing out. Leis were being thrown into the ocean, and if a lei would drift back to the shore, it was a sign that the departing man who had thrown the lei into the water, would one day return to the islands. This tradition not only applied to the sailors, but also to visitors of Hawaii who were returning home.
